FLYING DREAMS

InPark Magazines’ September issue features a detailed article exploring the challenges and goals we set out to accomplish with this ridefilm. As the producer, I was hired to take on the challenge to do what many other major players had determined would most likely not be possible.  Could a world-class soaring type attraction be accomplished using drones?  We tested “heavy lifting drones” coupled with a high resolution, high frame rate Red camera outfitted with a special fisheye lens, meant to match and align for the needed spherical projection. In addition to stability would be the requirement (even willingness) to utilize new flight methods to maneuver in a manner analogous to that of a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. Several drone companies sought to find a solution, however, one New York company in particular accomplished the feat. With our modified approach tested and solidified, we staged our first shoot at Monument Valley, Utah – to great success!  But could I take my “A” team around the world with me to repeat the magic again and again?  Our initial excitement was swiftly quelled once I learned that not even E.U. countries had any reciprocal agreements with the likes of our F.A.A., or even between themselves.  The pilot certification flight hours and aircraft worthiness licensing process was on a country by country basis, with many many months required to fulfill all the specs.  There is no “standard” large scale drone, although most of the components used are manufactured by one company.  So I set out to seek drone companies unique to each location that could replicate the drone flight style we’d established was possible.  Ultimately, we were able to build amazing teams at each location, together producing fantastic shots to immerse the rider into the Ferrari flying experience.  I am sorry to say I cannot post the final ride footage, you will have to make a trip to Barcelona and visit Port Aventura World’s new Ferrari Land in Spain, to ride the ride – and get the true full experience! I will be posting further updates to the slideshow above as time permits. In addition to handling the production for all location filming I also produced and oversaw the local and international casting for our pepper’s ghost and green screen pre-show needs.  My immense thanks to the many and varied crews and companies that made creation of this special venue attraction film possible.  From the moment you step into the Ferrari Experience building, you are enveloped by the rich history and passion of Ferrari himself and the brand of excellence that is Ferrari today.
