It usually pays to keep in touch with colleagues. My Production Manager from Starship Troopers, Christopher Morrison, left me in the dust and went on to directing music videos and soon had one feature film under his belt. By this time I’d left Dreamworks and had decided to spend time focused on my music. We were talking and Mink (Christopher) told me about his current feature and that the composer they’d hired had taken the upfront 50% and then simply disappeared. I told him I’d do the score for the other 50%, grabbed my instructor and one of my classmates from a Pro-Tools class I was taking, and we created the score for Full Clip. I suppose if I’d know that the other half was only $5,000 I might have thought twice, but probably not, as it got me my first “music by” screen credit.
